LIAN, Batangas - Internationally acclaimed marine scientists are in the Philippines to attend the Global Mangrove IUCN (World Conservation Union) Mangrove Workshop and the Indo-Pacific Seagrass Red List Assessment Workshop at Matabungkay Beach Resort in Lian, Batangas. From March 8-16, 2008, at least 30 scientists will be analyzing existing data to classify marine species according to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Verde Island is in the middle of Verde Passage -- cited by studies as the center of the marine biodiversity in the world. The long-term goal of the project is to maintain and protect the productive potential of the ecosystem in the Verde. Passage Marine Corridor such that species and ecological processes are sustained, and human welfare supported and improved. Beneficiaries are: fisherfolks, people’s groups, and LGUs.

Meralco was awarded 927 hectares of land in Bgy. Puray Montalban, Rizal by the DENR. Meralco has assumed the responsibility of reforesting this area using its own resources. The project was divided into 5 modules, and was completed in October 1996. Meralco continues to maintenan, protect, and replant of trees. Trees planted : 130,122 in 434 hectares.
