To survive, any business or corporation must be useful to the society it serves.

Oscar M. Lopez
Chairman of the Lopez Group

For more than a century, the Lopez family has practiced the concept of private business reaching out to their communities and the nation, not only in times of calamities, but as customary behavior. It is a behavior they have accepted as the norm. See Lopez History

Through the years, philanthropy has shifted to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), focusing on equipping communities to stand on their own. The beneficiaries are treated not as dependents but are educated to become active partners for social development.

The CSR initiatives of the Lopez Group are aligned with the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (or MDGs) in poverty alleviation, education, environment, and health. The Lopez Group is also a champion in advocacy through its worldwide media outlets.

The Lopez family business interests in telecommunications, broadcasting, power generation and distribution, land development, infrastructure and other sectors are held through a series of holding companies. Lopez, Inc., is privately held by the Lopez family and serves as the principal holding and management company for Benpres and other businesses.

Historically, the Lopez family started doing business in 1926 under the business name E&F Lopez Enterprises, named after the two brothers: Eugenio Lopez, Sr. and Fernando Lopez. The co-ownership agreement and business operations of the company was formalized in 1928 with the take over control and management of sugar plantations in Negros Occidental. From then, it went into other businesses such as, publication, shipping, land transportation and aviation. The old Lopez, Inc. was founded in 1935 as a real estate business. It then further expanded its business to include cinemas and other land transportation. E&F Lopez, Inc. was then organized in 1940 with the opening of theaters, introduction of ice cream business in Western Visayas, expansion of its airline and shipping businesses, purchase of The Manila Chronicle, opening of its own cement company and establishment of Iloilo City Colleges (now known as University of Iloilo). It ventured into broadcasting in 1956 with the acquisition of ABS, followed by purchase of MBS the following year, then into financial business with the organization of PCI Bank in 1960, and onwards into other businesses.

In 1962 all properties and businesses of E&F Lopez Enterprises were transferred to Benpres Corporation, taken after the name of the Lopez patriarchs: Benito and Presentacion.

In 1967, PML was established as the holding company of the Eugenio Lopez, Sr. family.

In 1979, the properties of Benpres Corporation was divided between the two brothers: 50% of which owned by Fernando Lopez was transferred to their owned corporation (Inaec Agro-Development), while the 50% of which owned by Eugenio Lopez, Sr. was acquired by PML and absorbed Benpres Corporation as its wholly-owned subsidiary.

In 1993 the two corporations were merged and re-structured: • PML, which was the surviving corporation in the merger, and • The former Lopez, Inc., which was incorporated in 1962 originally under the name Benpres Corporation, which was the wholly-owned subsidiary.

In the same year, as part of the restructuring of the Lopez family businesses, the merged corporation was re-named “Lopez, Inc.” Benpres Holdings Corporation (BHC) was likewise established. Lopez, Inc. transferred its ownership in ABS-CBN, PCIB, FPHC, Meralco, PCIB, Sky Vision, Bayantel, RCPI, and other corporations in exchange for 96.1% ownership in BHC.
